Common people, who are not aware of Sikh History, are unable to understand display of Arms in Sikh Gurudwaras & this demonstration of Gatka;wrestling bouts;fighting with swords at Sikhs religious Tableaux .Actually under the challenging situation ,during Mughal intolerant rulers, in order to defend against aggression,Guru Hargobindji, sixth Sikh Guru,(1606-1645 A.D.) regenerated a spirit of militancy in the lives of the Sikhs by asking people to take physical and military exercises & practices in the use of arms of all types, riding horses & wrestling. He also enjoined upon religious singers to sing heroic ballads, martial music in order to instill courage, bravery & martial outlook to redeem suffering people from tyranny & injustice.Along with recitation of of hymns,Sikhs were taught the practical lesson of dharma yudha/holy war.It gave birth to a new concept of the Saint Soldiers.
It was on account of this idea that Guru constructed Akal Takht near Harmandir Sahib as to keep the temporal & spiritual centres near each other. Its a clear indication that the Sikh Community pay equal regard to the spiritual & temporal interests of human life!
